Ontario Tenants Complain About Increasing Eviction Rates

Tenants rights advocates in Ontario are calling for swift government action after new statistics show a sharp increase in the number of evictions taking place in the province.

A total of 65,000 eviction applications were filed in Canada’s most populous province last year, up nearly 9% from 2004. 29,000 of these evictions were filed in Toronto alone.

Tenant groups say that the provincial government needs to strengthen the Tenant Protection Act, which was first introduced in 1998. They say that better measures need to be taken to ensure that people don’t lose their homes under unfair circumstances.

Premier McGuinty’s government says that the Act will be reviewed this spring, in order to assess the alleged problem, and attempt to come to a fair solution for both tenants and landlords.

McGuinty promised a new landlord and tenant act in his first year in office and it has been over 2-1/2 years and still nothing.

I wonder what they have to say on the Ontario Tenants Rights http://www.ontariotenants.ca website?
